2015: VW DieselgateLarge-scale fraud as industrial policy and the consequences if it is discovered. German politicians have systematically created an environment in which Volkswagen thought it could get away with it.Estimates of the costs go up to 20 to 25 billion EUR. While Tesla is currently making a 6 billion investment to build a battery factory for 50 GWh annual battery production, Volkswagen is sinking several times that amount into the emissions fraud affair. The money could have been invested in 200 GWh battery factories. Enough for 3 million electric cars with a 50 kWh battery and 3 million plug-in hybrids with a 16 kWh battery. I am assuming realistic battery capacities here, not rolling waivers for electric cars and plug-in hybrids optimized for the standard consumption fraud formula.
The first serious Tesla competitor is presented at the IAA 2015: The Thunder Power with 125 kWh battery is to be launched on the market in 2017. A Taiwanese electronics company feels called upon to shake up the luxury car class. Tesla announced the Model 3 in 2016 and receives 400,000 pre-orders. Renault gives the Zoe a larger battery for a range of 400 km. GM announces the Chevrolet Bolt. The time of rolling disclaimers is over. Renault turned Dacia into a low-cost brand within the Group. Since October 2014, I have been enjoying the excellent services of Gérard Detourbet: after my Seat Alhambra was destroyed in the underground parking garage during a flood, I now drive a Dacia Lodgy. Minivan at half the price, state-of-the-art lightweight technology, 2 liters more economical than my previous Alhambra. Now Renault is putting Gérard Detourbet, dubbed "Mr. Low Cost" by the media, in charge of cheap electric cars.
A large number of vehicles are to be delivered to a Chinese city. Before the delivery on December 30, 2015, a lot of parking space is occupied. These are 12m electric buses with a 324 kWh battery and e6 electric cars with an 82 kWh battery. |
