Fuel cycle in nuclear fusion reactors

In a torus system as planned for ITER, only a small amount of deuterium and tritium is fused per combustion cycle before the resulting helium leads to the process being aborted.

Tritium recovery
Tirtium is radioactive and expensive. It must therefore be recovered in the fuel cycle of the fusion reactor. At ITER, it is estimated that around 1 kg of tritium must be separated from deuterium with a purity of 1:10 to the power of 8 per hour from the gases after fusion.

Kyropumps
There are no conventional vacuum pumps for use in the fusion reactor. This is why kyropumps are being developed for this purpose. The solution is to freeze the gas instead of sucking it in. This is followed by the removal of the radioactive and tritium from the exhaust gases, which is still needed for the next fusion process.
